To our knowledge, this is the first book to cover the topic of biotic stress and yield loss. Although one type of biotic stress—arthropod injury—may be better understood than the others, plant responses to biotic stresses continue to be largely ignored and poorly understood. Projected onset of mosquito season is delayed in the southwestern United States because of extremely dry and hot spring and summers; however, increased temperature and late summer and fall rains extend the mosquito season. These results are unique in being a broad-scale calculation of the projected impacts of climate change on a WNV vector. Southern pine beetle (SPB; Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman), a native insect that has historically affected pine (Pinus spp.) ecosystems in the southeastern U.S., has recently expanded northward causing extensive tree mortality in pitch pine (P. rigida) and pitch pine-oak (Quercus spp.) forests of eastern Long Island, NY.

You can view samples of our professional work here. The expression of seed dormancy related to germination temperature was studied in 25 wheat genotypes grown in the field at two locations near Zagreb and Županja in Croatia during / growing season.

Germination tests were conducted at 15, 20 and 25 °C at harvest maturity (Time 1) as well as after 10 days (Time 2) and 15 months (Time 3) of seed after-ripening at room temperature Cited by: 9.

In the temperate region temperature is the main factor influencing the germination period of plant species. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of constant and fluctuating temperatures on dormancy and germination under laboratory and field conditions in the three wetland species Lycopus europaeus, Mentha aquatica and Stachys by: Seed dormancy and germination Seed dormancy is defined as a temporary failure of an intact, viable seed to complete germination under conditions that favor germination (Bewley, ).

Seed dormancy assessment is based on seed germination, which is the result of the balance between the degree of embryo dormancy and the embryo growth potential to File Size: 8MB. The use of dormancy population parameters such as T l and T h (Washitani, ; Grundy et al., ) in combination with thermal‐time models for the estimation of θ 1 of the fraction of nondormant seeds (Batlla & Benech‐Arnold, ), provided a flexible approach to clearly disentangle the effects of temperature on seed dormancy from those Cited by:   Certain ecotypes of Acer rubrum did not show seed or bud dormancy (Perry & Wang, ; Perry, ), but buds of northern ecotypes became dormant and required chilling, while only some of their seeds exhibited dormancy (Farmer & Cunningham, ; Farmer &.

“Seed zone,” “seed source,” and “seed lot” are terms used to identify seed collections. A seed zone is a geographic area that has relatively similar climate and soil type (figure ). For some native species, seed zones or transfer guidelines have been defined by geneticists to help land managers choose appropriate seed sources.

The predominant emphasis on harmful effects of environmental stresses on growth of woody plants has obscured some very beneficial effects of such stresses. Slowly increasing stresses may induce physiological adjustment that protects plants from the growth inhibition and/or injury that follow when environmental stresses are abruptly imposed.
